The Indianola City Council gave direction to city staff to look into alternatives for the South K Street Paving Project at their meeting Tuesday, going in a different direction from the previous plan of a full curb, gutter, and sewer system in the area, and focus on paving the road to help with dust control.
City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News whatever the outcome of the project ends up being, they want to do it right and not have to re-do the project again only a couple years down the line.
“We want to make sure that the drainage issues are resolved, we want to make sure there is a good sub-base to what is put in as far as asphalt or concrete. So the investment is a good investment for the community, at least a 10-15 year road investment. If the city decides to go asphalt, that is the more cost-effective option we could look at if we provide a good sub-base along the way. They don’t want to look at chip-seal or just putting asphalt on the current surface, because it will fail too quickly. But at the same time, they are trying to be respectful and good stewards of taxpayer resources by not having an urban design in a rural area.”
