The Indianola City Council meets in regular session Monday, which will involve the council discussing the South K Street Paving Project in a work session, and giving direction to city staff in the regular meeting.

The council gave direction to city staff to look for alternatives to the previous plan of a full curb, gutter, and sewer system in the area, and focus on paving the road to help with dust control.

City Manager Ben Reeves tells KNIA News whatever the outcome of the project ends up being, they want to do it right and not have to re-do the project again only a couple years down the line.

“We want to make sure that the drainage issues are resolved, we want to make sure there is a good sub-base to what is put in as far as asphalt or concrete. So the investment is a good investment for the community, at least a 10-15 year road investment. If the city decides to go asphalt, that is the more cost-effective option we could look at if we provide a good sub-base along the way. They don’t want to look at chip-seal or just putting asphalt on the current surface, because it will fail too quickly. But at the same time, they are trying to be respectful and good stewards of taxpayer resources by not having an urban design in a rural area.”

The council will consider the second reading of a rezoning change at 1101 West 12th Avenue from agricultural to residential, the vacation of an alley on the 1000 block of East Salem Avenue, and a change order on the Hillcrest Avenue Reconstruction Project. The work session begins at 6pm in the city council chambers at Indianola City Hall.
