Suffering its first loss of the season, the Central College men’s soccer team gave #23 Macalester College (Minn.) a challenge Tuesday in a 2-1 match.

The Dutch (3-1-2) were outshot by the Scots (5-1-2) by a 22-5 margin but four of the five shots for Central were on frame. Dutch goalkeeper Ronan Murphy made seven saves against his old team. Murphy played his first two seasons at Macalester. Central’s goal came in the final seconds of the first half as Lay Doe Htoo buried an unassisted goal to send the teams into the halftime break knotted at 1-1. Macalester found a second goal five minutes into the second half and held on for the victory.

Central starts the American Rivers Conference season Saturday night with a 7:30 p.m. affair against Simpson College in Indianola.

After winning eight matches in a row the Central College volleyball team fell in four sets at home against Grinnell College Tuesday night.

The Dutch (10-2) had not lost since September 2 but the Pioneers (6-6) got the best of the night with a 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16 victory. Right-side hitter Gracie Daniels paced Central with 14 kills. Also in double figures were outside hitter Leslie Snow with 12 and middle hitter Elyse Johnson with 11. Snow had a double-double with 22 digs and Johnson had a team-high five blocks. Setter Avery Rexroat had 42 assists and libero Colleen Kenney had 24 digs.

The Dutch next play in a triangular on Saturday in Winona, Minnesota. Central’s first match is at 4 p.m. against Concordia College-Moorhead (Minn.) followed by the host school St. Mary’s University (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
