Improving to 2-0 in Class 1A District 6 play Friday night, the Pella Christian football team dominated Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont en route to a 56-38 victory heard live on the KRLS2 stream at KNIAKRLS.com.
The Eagles controlled every aspect of the game early on in the contest. Pella Christian forced four turnovers defensively, scored twice on special teams, and threw four touchdowns to take a 42-8 led at the end of the first quarter. A Benny Schirz interception return for a touchdown to start the second quarter made the score 49-8 Eagles, but the Rockets snuck in a touchdown before halftime to make it 49-14 at the break. Pella Christian added on a Schirz rushing touchdown in the third to go up 56-14, before EBF scored three late touchdowns to make it 56-38.
Caleb Van Arendonk completed four of his five passes on the night for 80 yards and four touchdowns. Isaiah Breems had two receiving scores, while Camden Parker and Schirz had one a piece. Defensively, Schirz had two interceptions and a fumble recovery, while Brecken Ritzert and Landon Fransman each had an interception. On special teams, Trevor Veenstra had a 77 yard kickoff return touchdown and Garrett Wielard blocked punt that Fransman recovered in the endzone for a score.
The Eagles improved to 4-1 on the season and now turn their attention to a potential district champion deciding game against Sigourney Keota next Friday.
