Central Closes Tied for 11th in 33-Team Wisconsin Women’s Golf Tourney

The second-round charge the Central College women’s golf team needed never materialized at the Midwest Region Classic Saturday.

The Dutch slid from ninth to a tie for 11th with Lake Forest College (Ill.) in the 33-team field at 327-330–657. The University of Wisconsin-Whitewater rallied to take the crown with 318-305—623 while Adrian College (Mich.) shot 317-311–628 and American Rivers rival the University of Dubuque climbed to third at 323-314—637. Mackenzie Biggs, who shared the first-round individual lead with 74, turned in a season-worst 82 Saturday and finished in a tie for ninth at 156 in the massive 194-player field at the par-72 Brighton Dale Links. Peyton Bytnar posted Central’s best round of the day and shot 78-80—158. Lydia Grond had 85-85—170, Avery Woods shot 90-83—173 and Rachel Sohn 90-90—180. Playing as at-large entrants, Parker Stout shot 84-81–165 and Jaden Smith had 94-98–192.

Central is off until defending its title at the American Rivers tournament October 7th-9th at the Ames Country Club. Two starters return from the squad that posted a 42-shot runaway win at the Ames Country Club a year ago.

Central Takes Seventh in Millikin Triathlon

Competing in its deepest field of the season, the Central College women’s triathlon team finished seventh of eight teams at the Millikin Collegiate Cup Saturday.

Central’s four runners totaled 101 points behind the winning score of 215 points by North Central College (Ill.). It was the first draft-legal sprint triathlon race with distances of 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer bike. Grace Benson made it three different lead finishers for Central this year, lacing 12th in 1:15.53. Luci Laidlaw was 17th in 1:16.59 and Addie Smith was 20th in 1:17.35. In her second collegiate meet, Sophie Lunning was 44th in 1:31.37.

Central’s next meet will be at the USA Triathlon West Regional Qualifier in West Springfield, Missouri on October 14th.

Central Wins a Pair of Five-Set Volleyball Matches

After getting 2-0 leads in both of its matches Saturday, the Central College volleyball team held on to win 3-2 twice at a triangular hosted by Saint Mary’s University.

In its opener against Concordia College – Moorhead (Minn.) Central won 25-22, 25-18, 20-25, 24-26, 15-12. Against the hosts, the Dutch were victorious 26-24, 26-23, 26-28, 15-25, 15-7. Emma Wagler led the team with 15 kills against Concordia. Against Saint Mary’s, Gracie Daniels had 14 to pace the squad. Avery Rexroat had double-doubles against both teams, with 43 assists and 14 digs against Concordia and 36 assists and 11 digs against Saint Mary’s. Wagler was in on four blocks against both teams. Elyse Johnson had three service aces against Saint Mary’s.

The Dutch head to Galesburg, Illinois Wednesday for a 6 p.m. match against Knox College.

Dutch Wrap Up League Individual Men’s Tennis Meet

The Central College men’s tennis team completed its turn in hosting the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Saturday with the singles brackets.

Central entered 18 players from its roster into the five singles brackets. Hayden Sinclair advanced the furthest of any Dutch players, reaching the semifinals in the E-Flight. He defeated Daniel Vargas of Buena Vista University 4-0, 4-0 and then beat Colton Abels of Wartburg College 4-0, 2-4 (10-5) in the quarterfinals. Two other Dutch players made quarterfinals in their bracket. Victor Nop advanced there in the D-Flight and Brady Corn made it in the E-Flight. Central lost both of its matches in the A-Flight of singles. Nick Scott lost 4-1, 4-2 to Eli Young of Luther College and Louk Rijsdijk beat Ayden Fletcher 4-2, 4-0.

A few select players are headed to the ITA Division III Midwest Regional at St. Peter, Minnesota next weekend. The rest of the team will host St. Mary (Kan.) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Whalen, Larson Pick Up Doubles Win at Women’s Tennis Regional

The Central College women’s tennis tandem of Madi Whalen and Jennifer Larson picked up a consolation doubles win Saturday at the ITA Division III Midwest Regional.

Larson and Whalen triumphed against Chichi Ono and Reese Williams of Wartburg College 8-4 in the first round of the consolation doubles bracket. They lost their second match 8-1 against Amanye Reynolds and Meg Ulrich of Macalester College (Minn.) Central’s other doubles tandem Becca Vala and Jenna Hernandez fell 8-5 to Tristin Jantz and Jordan Scharf of the University of Wisconsin-Platteville in its only match of the day.

The Dutch return to regular season action sees them host the University of Dubuque on Friday at 4 p.m.
