In an unusual make-up football game Monday night, PCM defeated the Union Community Knights 49-21 in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
In the first quarter, Union was able to score twice on the Mustangs after a long kickoff return to start the game, and a broken sweep play on their second drive of the game. Despite the two miscues, the Mustangs took control midway through the first quarter and dominated the rest of the way. Junior running back Adrein Robbins had a monster first half, carrying the ball 19 times for 156 yards and four touchdowns. After the first half, Robbins gave way to sophomore running back Shay Burns, who capitalized on his opportunity with 17 carries for 145 yards.
Junior quarterback Gavin Van Gorp connected with receiver Griffin Olson four times through the air for 100 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustang defense was anchored by Jacob Wendt who recorded eight tackles in the game. PCM improves to 3-2 overall on the season and 2-0 in the district. They now have a short week to prepare for another long road trip Friday night when they travel to Vinton to take on the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. With just three days in between games, PCM head coach Greg Bonnett says his squad will need to be ready mentally for the unique week ahead.
“A lot of mental preparation to be quite honest with you. Even when I was starting to break down film on Vinton, some of the formations that they run and their back sets are very similar but they don’t run the same plays. I had to take a step back to make sure we’re running the plays that we need to be running or the defense we need to be running. In terms of preparation, most of it is done as far as being broken down but now it is just a matter of getting a game plan down to make sure it’s executed on the field.”
Friday night’s game against Vinton-Shellsburg will kickoff at 7:30 pm and can be heard live on the KRLS3 stream.
