A double feature of fall sports favored the ranked teams of Pella High School Tuesday. The #14 in 4A Dutch volleyball team swept Oskaloosa 3-0 at home (25-17, 25-18, 25-17), while the #1 girls and #2 boys cross country teams dominated the field at Williamsburg.
At home for the second consecutive week, the Pella volleyball girls put together their best conference match of the season, largely controlling their Highway 163 rivals. At one point, the Dutch scored 10 points in a row in set three after trailing to take control of the match and earn the sweep. Katie Scheckel tallied 13 kills and Bryn Higginbotham added eight; Kyli Hiemstra finished with 23 digs and three service aces.
Pella improves to 15-10 overall and 2-2 in conference play and head to the loaded Urbandale tournament Saturday.
On the road to Williamsburg, the Pella cross country teams ran competitively for the first time in over a week, but showed no rust in the process. The #1 Pella girls ran without three key varsity contributors and still won the event with 42 team points, defeating 2nd place Mount Vernon Lisbon by 30 points — the 3rd ranked team in 3A. Ruth Dunham placed 2nd (19:47.8) and Marissa Ferebee was 3rd individual (19:50.7), while Macy Schroeder (20:29.3), Elsie Brenneman (20:38.3), and Sophia Boonstra (21:03.5) were the scoring varsity Dutch runners. #5 in 3A Autumn Blink had the night off, while ranked runners Raegan Snieder and Lizzie Neumann ran in the JV race to allow for in-squad varsity lineup competition.
In a field that featured the #4 and #5 in 3A boys teams, the #2 Dutch scored 41 team points to cruise to victory. Canaan Dunham broke the Williamsburg course record to take the individual crown, while Nathan Vander Waal (3rd – 16:10.9), Noah Schuknecht (10th – 16:50.2), Aren Hellbusch (12th – 16:52.8), and Mason Gaulke (15th – 17:03) were featured in the team score.
