In what has shaped up to be likely the Class 1A District 6 championship deciding game, the Pella Christian football team travels to long-standing foe Sigourney Keota tonight.
The meeting between the Eagles and Cobras will be the ninth meeting dating back to 2012, and the third in as many years. The prior two contests in the series determined the Class 1A District 5 champion, with Sigourney Keota winning both games in close fashion. Pella Christian and the Cobras are each 4-1 on the season and are the only teams in Class 1A District 6 with 2-0 records. The Eagles two league wins came against Pleasantville 42-14 and Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont 56-38. Meanwhile, Sigourney Keota defeated Cardinal 67-0 and Pleasantville 31-24 in overtime. Looking to dethrone the Cobras as district champions, Pella Christian head coach Rich Kacmarynski says his squad will need to be better on both sides of the ball than they’ve been the last two years in this matchup.
“Offensively, we’ve got to move the ball and score. We’ve only score two touchdowns the last two years in each game, and Sigourney is not an offense where you can probably win 14-7 because their offense burns clock and wears your defense out. And then defensively, we got to get off the field. There are too many times in the last two years where they just continue to get first down after first down. So to me, those are the two big things we got to do.”
