Depth of Dutch Women’s Tennis Lineup Delivers Victory
The Central College women’s tennis team defeated the University of Dubuque 6-3 Friday afternoon, relying on the depth of its lineup to get the job done.
Central (4-3, 3-1 American Rivers Conference) used eight players to fill out its lineup and six of them contributed to at least one point. Jenna Hernandez and Becca Vala won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and then both won their singles matches. Hernandez won 6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles while Vala won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. The freshman duo of Lauren Gano and Emma Murphy won 8-0 at No. 3 doubles, their second conference win together. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney and Brianna Lindstrom also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and No. 6 singles, respectively.
Central has two home matches Saturday starting with Loras College at 10 a.m. at the A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex courts. The second match is a 2 p.m. meeting across town with the University of St. Mary (Kan.) at the Pella High School courts.
Scott Wins Match at Regional Tennis Tournament
Senior Nick Scott gave the Central College men’s tennis team its second individual win at the ITA Division III Midwest Regional in the last 10 years Friday.
The regional meet, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) has a main singles and main doubles draw with two additional singles and one additional doubles draw. Scott earned the program’s second singles win in the top flight since Coach Ryun Ferrell’s arrival in 2015. He defeated Ryan Fonseca of the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire 7-5, 6-4 in his opening match. Scott lost 6-3, 6-1 to Lucas Willett of Grinnell College in his second match. AJ Wilkins lost his only top-flight singles match 6-0, 6-1 against Cyriac Cayuela of Carthage College (Wis.) 6-0, 6-1. In the B-Flight of singles, Ayden Fletcher lost 4-2, 4-2 to Aniketh Vipparia of Carleton College (Minn.). Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy lost 4-1, 4-0 to Jasper Yang of Carleton. Alex Slaymaker went 2-0 in the C-Flight of singles defeating Eli Henderson of the University of Northwestern – St. Paul (Minn.) 4-0, 4-0 in the first round. He also beat Alex Laho of Concordia College-Moorhead (Minn.) 4-2, 4-2. Travis Subbert won his opening match 4-1, 5-4 over Ethan Ahrar of Bethel University (Minn.), but was eliminated by Cathal Mee of St. Olaf College (Minn.) 4-1, 2-4, 10-5.
All three of Central’s doubles team played in the top-flight of doubles. Subbert and Scott advanced to the second round of the bracket after a withdrawal. Wilkins and Alvarez Chedzoy lost 8-6 to a team from the Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.). Fletcher and Slaymaker lost to a Grinnell team 8-3.
In addition to consolation matches for the six players at the regional meet, a different group of Central players will host the University of St. Mary (Kan.) in a 2 p.m. dual at the Pella High School courts.
