Promising Runner-Up Finish for Central Women’s Cross Country Team

Previewing the site of the November 11th NCAA Division III Midwest Regional,  the No. 23-ranked Central College women’s cross country team delivered a promising showing at the Dan Huston Invitational Saturday.

No.-2 ranked Wartburg College, the host school, took the title in the 18-team meet with 31 points while Central had 57. Caroline McMartin tooke third in 22:08.6 on the 6,000-meter course, just 5 seconds out of first place. Megan Johnson was seventh in 22:51.2 while Addison Parrott was 10th in 23:22.6, Lindsey Davidson was 11th in 23:26.1, Leah Bontrager was 26th in 24:19.1, Hailey Hill was 29th in 24:23.0 and Kate Hoogensen was 37th in 24:37.1.

Central journeys to the East Coast October 14th for the Connecticut College Invitational at New London, Connecticut.

Central Men’s Cross Country Team Races to Second

It was a resurgent performance for the Central College men’s cross country team Saturday.

After a disappointing showing at the Roy Griak Invitational in Minneapolis last week, the Dutch, ranked No. 32 in Division III, responded by knocking off No. 17-rated Loras College in taking second at the 21-team Dan Huston Invitational. No. 7-rated Wartburg College, the host squad, was a decisive winner with 29 points, with the Dutch at 86. Adam Sylvia was just a second off his 2022 career best, finishing sixth in 25:18.4 on the 8,000-meter course. Noah Jorgenson was ninth in 25:23.8, with Caleb Silver 14th in 25:41.1, William Wadsley 20th in 26:03.3, Derek Webster 37th in 26:51.3, Jack Brown 44th in 26:52.2, and Ben DeValk 47th in 26:59.7.

Central is off until embarking on a major trip to New London, Connecticut for the Connecticut College Invitational on October 14th.

Central Women Finish Level with Dubuque in Women’s Soccer

Ending the University of Dubuque’s winning streak, the Central College women’s soccer team earned a 1-1 draw Saturday.

The Spartans (6-2-1, 1-0-1 American Rivers Conference) had won six straight matches entering the meeting with the Dutch (5-2-4, 0-1-1 conference). Dubuque was listed No. 7 in Region IX in the United Soccer Coaches regional rankings Tuesday. Central conceded an early goal and went into halftime trailing 1-0. Grace Coates scored her 10th goal of the season at the 55:52 mark, using an assist from Paige Caill, her seventh of the season. Zoey Sizemore recorded seven saves in goal.

Central is back at home Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. match against Buena Vista University.

Dutch Bag Conference Volleyball Victory

In its first American Rivers Conference match of the season Saturday, the Central College volleyball team defeated Luther College in four sets.

Central (14-3, 1-0 conference) beat Luther (5-11, 0-2 conference) 25-16, 24-26, 25-20, 25-22. In the second match of the triangular, the Dutch fell in five sets against the University of Wisconsin – Stout 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 24-26, 15-12. Outside hitters Leslie Snow and Gracie Pierson both registered double-doubles against Luther. Snow had 18 kills and 12 digs while Pierson had 15 kills and 10 digs. Pierson also had four blocks. Setters Avery Rexroat and Makayla Ribble added 24 and 23 assists, respectively. Libero Colleen Kenney had 20 digs and two service aces. Snow had another double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs against Wis.-Stout. Rexroat had 35 assists and Kenney had 29 digs. Elyse Johnson had three blocks.

Central hosts the University of Dubuque next Friday at 6 p.m.

First-Half Lead Falters for Dutch Men’s Soccer Team

A 2-0 halftime lead for the Central College men’s soccer team melted away in a 3-2 loss to the University of Dubuque Saturday afternoon.

The Dutch (4-4-2, 0-2-0 American Rivers Conference) struck first against the Spartans (4-5-1, 1-1-0 conference) on Carter Newhouse’s second goal of the week in the 33rd minute. Lay Doe Htoo had the assist. The halftime lead was extended to 2-0 with a Dubuque own goal in the 43rd minute. All three of Dubuque’s second half goals were off the foot of Drew Wisdom and were taken from outside of the box. 

The Dutch have another home match on Wednesday at 1 p.m. against Buena Vista University.

Loras Trips Up Central’s Women’s Tennis Squad

In American Rivers Conference action, the Loras College women’s tennis team got the best of Central College in an 8-1 match Saturday morning.

Central (5-4, 3-2 conference) also earned a 5-4 win over the University of St. Mary (Kan.) later in the day. The Dutch were coming off a Friday night win over Dubuque but couldn’t make it two conference wins in a row. The No. 3 doubles team of Emma Murphy and Lauren Gano scored the only point against Loras, taking an 8-2 victory. In singles, three Central players pushed their matches into a tiebreaker before ultimately falling. Jenna Hernandez lost 7-6, 4-6, 10-6 at No. 3. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney lost 6-3, 5-7, 10-4 at No. 4 and Alli Kreider lost 5-7, 6-4, 12-10 at No. 6

Against Saint Mary, Kreider and Abbie Den Adel won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles. Central clinched the match with singles wins at Nos. 3 -6 spots from Jayden Kissack, Keleigh Hall, Kalina Schubert and Katelyn Freeman, respectively.

The Dutch travel to Buena Vista University on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. match.

Central Men Fall to Saint Mary in Tennis

Competing with a young contingent of athletes, the Central College men’s tennis team lost 8-1 against the University of St. Mary (Kan.) Saturday.

With most of its top players competing on the second day of the ITA Division III Midwest Regional, the Dutch (0-2) featured five freshmen in doubles with three freshmen, two sophomores and one junior in the singles lineup. Hayden Sinclair’s 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 victory at No. 5 singles was the lone point for the Dutch. In consolation action at the regional meet, AJ Wilkins went 2-1 in singles. Ayden Fletcher and Ernest Alvarez Chedzoy both also went 1-1.

Central will wrap up the fall portion of the season with a 4 p.m. dual in Des Moines against Morningside College next Friday.
