Dutch Rebound for Volleyball Victory over Loras

The Central College volleyball team bounced back Saturday morning in a big way to sweep an American Rivers Conference match from Loras College 25-21, 25-17, 27-25.

After being swept Friday night against the University of Dubuque, Central (15-4, 2-1 American Rivers Conference) got back to its winning ways against Loras (8-12, 0-3 conference). Outside hitter Gracie Pierson had 12 digs, 10 kills, and six service aces to lead the Dutch in all three categories. The Dutch had six players with at least five kills, including eight from Leslie Snow and seven from Gracie Daniels. Setter Avery Rexroat finished with 33 assists. Elyse Johnson had four solo blocks and assisted on another. 

Central travels to Simpson College for a 6 p.m. match Wednesday night.

Coe Sinks Central Women’s Tennis Squad

Unable to get a point in three close doubles matches, the Central College women’s tennis team was defeated 7-2 by Coe College Saturday afternoon.

In doubles, Central’s (6-5, 4-3 American Rivers Conference) three pairings lost by 8-5, 8-6 and 8-5 margins, respectively. Sophomore Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney won her fourth conference singles match of the fall, with a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4 singles. Alli Kreider also picked up a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles.     

Central travels to Waverly Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. match against Wartburg College in the final regular season dual. The winner of the match is likely to finish fourth in the American Rivers Conference.

Central Hanging Close in Conference Women’s Golf Tourney

Posting three scores in the 70s, the Central College women’s golf team is lurking four shots off the lead after the first round of the 54-hole American Rivers tourney at the par-71 Ames Golf and Country Club Saturday.

The University of Dubuque shot 313 while the defending champion Dutch shot 317. Last year’s conference medalist, Lydia Grond, had three birdies, including two in the final four holes to card a 76. She’s tied for second individually behind Dubuque’s Morgan Hawkins, who shot 74. Mackenzie Biggs followed with a 77 and stands fourth Peyton Bytnar shot a 1-over-par 36 on the front nine and finished with 79 to tie for fifth. Avery Woods was Central’s fourth scorer with 85, while Rachel Sohn shot a 95.

Sunday’s 18-hole second round starts at 10 a.m. with Central’s first player teeing off at 11:30 a.m.
