The Knoxville Police Department wants citizens to be reminded of raking etiquette and city codes during this fall season.
The leaves have started to fall in south central Iowa and it is important to remember city codes when raking. Burning leaves and small branches in the City of Knoxville is allowed, but an adult is required to be present and a water source must be nearby. It is important to never blow leaves into the street, as this causes the storm sewer intake grate to become plugged, which reduces water flow and can cause street flooding. Blowing or raking leaves into the street can also be dangerous for bikers. Knoxville Police Department Community service officer Meredith Clark says there are best practices when it comes to the disposal of leaves.
“We just want to remind everyone to please be a good neighbor. Try not to rake leaves onto a neighboring property. If you aren’t comfortable burning leaves you can always bag them up and have them picked up by the regular garbage hauler.”
