Central Close Fall Men’s Golf Season with Shortened Lineup
Limited to a four-man lineup, the Central College men’s golf team closed in ninth place, just a shot out of sixth, at the 15-team Wabash (Ind.) Invitational on Tuesday.
Central posted 296-306-317—919 at the par-72 Broadmoor Country Club, while Centre College (Ky.) rallied to claim the title, finishing at 310-293-296—899. Rhodes College (Tenn.) was second at 303-299-299—901. Central’s Jake Moffett, who has played through injury throughout the season, withdrew about halfway through Tuesday’s closing round of the 54-hole tournament. After pushing through 36 holes Monday and shooting 78-81—159, the pain intensity worsened. Cole McGriff tied for 18th individually at 74-74-79—227 while John Oltman shot 72-78-78—228. Kayden Pendergrass had 78-73-79—230 and Harold Dobernecker shot 72-87-81—240. In addition to playing with a shortened lineup, the Dutch had to deal with a nearly 2-hour delayed start and 30 mph winds. The Dutch led the tournament after 18 holes and were tied for second entering the day.
The tourney concludes a successful fall season.
Luther Pulls Away from Central Women’s Soccer Team
A three-goal outburst in the second half pushed the Luther College women’s soccer team past Central College 4-1 Tuesday night.
Central (6-3-4, 1-2-1 American Rivers Conference) and Luther (5-5-4, 2-2-1 conference) were tied at 1-1 at the halftime break. The Dutch struck first in the 13th minute on a Paige Cahill goal assisted by Grace Coates. The Norse equalized in the 37th minute. Luther took the lead in the 73rd minute and put the game away with subsequent goals in the 77th and 84th minute. Central had a chance to make it 3-2 in the 82nd but an Alli Seegers’ penalty kick was saved and so was the immediate rebound attempt by Seegers.
The Dutch host Wartburg College at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Central Drops Final Women’s Tennis Dual at Wartburg
In the final dual of the fall season, the Central College women’s tennis team lost 7-2 at Wartburg College Tuesday night.
Central concludes the fall with a record of 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the American Rivers Conference, finishing in fifth place in the standings. Wartburg edged them for fourth place by finishing 5-3 in the league. Lauren Gano and Emma Murphy are now 5-1 together in conference doubles matches after taking an 8-7 decision at No. 2. Jenna Mitsuko Mahoney rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 win at No. 4 singles.
Central will close out its fall season at the American Rivers Conference Individual Championships Friday and Saturday in Cedar Rapids. All 19 players on the Dutch roster are scheduled to play, pending the outcome of poor weather forecasts that would make it difficult to play the entirety of the tournament as scheduled.
Dutch Men Earn Huge Soccer Road Win
Finding the back of the net twice in the second half, the Central College men’s soccer team took a 2-0 win at Luther College Tuesday night.
The Dutch (6-5-2, 2-2-0 American Rivers Conference) handed the Norse (5-4-4, 3-1-1 conference) their first league loss. Luther is in first place in the league standing with 10 points, while Central is in a three-way tie for fifth with six points. Nolan Piedimonte scored for the fifth time to break the scoreless tie in the 61st minute. Joe Brown was credited with an assist for his efforts in setting up the strike. Carter Newhouse widened the gap in the 76th minute to 2-0. A free kick from near midfield was sent in by Spencer Taylor before a Luther defender tried to clear the ball. Trysten Vasquez headed it across the goal to a waiting Newhouse who put a strong left foot on it and out of the keeper’s reach. Starting goalkeeper John Foster made five saves to earn a shutout. Starting defenders Vasquez, Taylor, Alejo Marcon and Lucas Bartachek played the full 90 minutes in shutting out the Norse for the first time since 2012.
The Dutch host Wartburg College Saturday at 1 p.m.
