Lewis Central scored points on all five first-half drives Friday night, building a 27-0 lead and beating the Norwalk football team 42-13 in a game heard live on KNIA3.
The third-ranked Titans improved to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Class 4A, District 6, maintaining sole possession of first place. The Warriors, now 5-3 overall, dropped to fourth place in the district standings at 2-2 with one regular-season game remaining.
The first two minutes of the game set the stage for the rest of the first half. Norwalk was stopped three-and-out and flagged for a personal foul on LC’s punt return, setting the Titans up at the Warrior 38-yard line. Caleb Moore then scored the first of his three touchdowns on a 14-yard run to put LC up 7-0.
Norwalk’s first-half possessions ended with three punts, a thwarted fake punt shovel pass and an interception. Lewis Central, which began its first three series in Norwalk territory, got two first-half TD runs from Moore, another by quarterback Brady Hetzel with 13.5 seconds left, and two field goals by Daniel Espinoza.
The Warriors recovered Tyden Eng’s squib kickoff at the LC 19 to open the third quarter and scored moments later on Aidan Harder’s 4-yard pass to Eli Robbins. They would turn the ball over on four of their next five possessions, however, and didn’t score again until James Hatlevig’s 3-yard TD pass to Isaac Peter on the final play of the game.
Lewis Central controlled the line of scrimmage all night and did not miss a beat when first-string running back Brody Patlan went down with an injury on the Titans’ opening drive. Moore was a workhorse, carrying the football 19 times for 118 yards in the first half alone and finishing with nearly 200. Quarterback Brady Hetzel ran for one touchdown and threw second-half scoring passes to Owen Thomas and Moore.
Norwalk will close out the regular season at Glenwood next Friday night, likely needing a victory to qualify for the 2023 playoffs.
