Norwalk earned the championship trophy at Saturday’s Winterset Volleyball Tournament, going 5-0 and closing out the regular season with a 24-14 match record.
The Class 4A ninth-ranked Warriors cruised through pool play with three wins in straight sets. They defeated Chariton 21-6, 21-8 and also swept Gilbert 21-17, 21-12 and South Central Calhoun 21-16, 21-11.
The Warriors then won a pair of 2-1 decisions in bracket play, outlasting Winterset 21-11, 16-21, 15-12 and rallying past Red Oak 18-21, 24-22, 15-7.
Individually, Norwalk senior Noelle Sutcliffe spiked 46 kills on the day and is now the single-season school record holder in that category with 382. Sutcliffe, who is also the program’s career kill leader, shared the previous single-season record of 363 with Abigail Brenizer.
Ava Johnson totaled 29 kills on Saturday and Ava McKay added 21. Freshman Hadley Michael finished the tournament with 102 assists while Grace Dehmer had 39 digs and 10 ace serves.
Class 4A regional play begins on Tuesday and Norwalk has earned a first round bye in Region 4. The Warriors will host either Carlisle or Des Moines Hoover on Thursday, October 19, at 7:00 p.m.
