Nine different players scored touchdowns as the Central College football team rocked Nebraska Wesleyan 72-0 Saturday at Ron & Joyce Schipper Stadium in a game heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
It’s the second biggest blowout in school history, and the largest since an 83-0 drubbing of Iowa Wesleyan in 1964. And it was a total team effort. The offense racked up 485 yards, including 34-of-49 passing for 353 yards by a trio of Dutch quarterbacks. The defense allowed just 177 yards and eight first downs, and didn’t let the Prairie Wolves cross midfield until the final drive of the game. And special teams recovered a fumble on a kickoff and blocked a punt.
“We did the things we wanted to do defensively. Anytime you shut out anybody in our conference that’s a good thing, so I thought defensively we played well and we were opportunistic”, Central coach Jeff McMartin said. “It was good to see us throw the ball effectively and we incorporated a lot of people in the game. We hit a lot of different receivers, had a lot of guys run the football and played a lot of people. That’s all very satisfying.”
Among those that found the end zone were Pella High grads Grant Nelson and Cam Schulte, and Joe Jansen had the blocked punt.
The Dutch are now 6-1 on the season and 4-1 in the American Rivers Conference. Up next is a trip to Wartburg to take on the defending league champion and third-ranked Knights.
