With the winter months coming, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) wants to remind residents to be safe on the roadways. Winter Operations Administrator for the Iowa DOT Craig Bargfrede says that safety for the public and their drivers is their number one concern.
“Most of the time in winter conditions, we’re only operating in that 15, 20, maybe up to 30 miles an hour range. And so, if you’re approaching a truck from the rear, you can really close on our trucks in a very short amount of time. The other thing we like to point out is our lighting pattern. So, if you see a combination of blue, white, and amber lights ahead of you, you need to recognize that you are approaching a DOT snowplow from the rear. So, you need to adjust your speed and your following distance accordingly.”
