The Norwalk volleyball team makes their state tournament debut on Monday, facing top seed and unbeaten Clear Creek-Amana in the Class 4A quarterfinal round. The match is scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start on Court 1 of Coralville’s Xtream Arena, and will be streamed live on kniakrls.com (KNIA3).

The 10th-ranked Warriors enter state with a 26-14 overall record following last Tuesday’s five-set regional final win at No. 8 North Polk. The Clippers return to state as the defending 4A runner-up with a 45-0 record, having lost just four sets all season. They swept Oskaloosa in the regional finals.

Clear Creek-Amana is led by 6-foot-2 senior Bliss Beck, who has tallied 389 kills and 111 blocks on the year, sporting an impressive kill efficiency of .471. Norwalk’s kill leader is 5-foot-11 senior Noelle Sutcliffe, who has 428 kills and a .265 efficiency.

The Clippers are serving nearly 95 percent as a team with 212 aces. The Warriors serve 93 percent with 180 aces.

Norwalk coach John Fulton tells KNIA-KRLS Sports that the Clippers have good players all over the floor, calling Beck a top-five player in the state and a dominant force out of the middle. But he also believes that the Warriors match up well with anybody when they are on top of their game. At last year’s Nevada Tournament, Norwalk defeated CC-A 2-1 in three competitive sets. Fulton says his team is embracing the challenge in front of them.

“We get to go and play one of the best teams… no matter what class,” he said. “I think they’re a top-five team… 1A through 5A, they’re an excellent squad. And we enjoy that. We like that. We have some history with them. We played them last year – and all of those girls are returning – and we think we have a good team too. I think we match up well with them.”

Monday’s winner will take on North Scott or ADM in a 4A semifinal Wednesday at noon.
