Marion County Conservation released their November Nature Notes on Thursday.
According to Marion County Naturalist Marla Mertz, most birds that need to migrate have already done so, with some waterfowl continuing to move through with colder fronts. Canada geese have been seen frequently flying from their feeding grounds to open water. Wintering bald eagles will start to enter the area this month and begin hunting for prey, before the winter gets too harsh. Mertz says that Horn’s Ferry Bridge below the Lake Red Rock dam is a great area to view wintering birds.
Deer rut continues into the month of November, with bucks and does commonly out and about at all times of the day, and continues until roughly the 3rd week of November. With most of the fields being harvested, deer generally move to cover closer to trees, river corridors, brushy, and dense areas. Many of these areas are close to roadways, so residents are encouraged to be cautious when driving.
