Competing for the Des Moines Lincoln girls swim team, Norwalk junior Emma Sizemore qualified for state in two events at Saturday’s regional meet in Johnston. She will be competing in her third state meet this weekend.
Sizemore placed fifth in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:26.3 and was also a member of the Rails’ fifth-place 200 freestyle relay, teaming with Haylee Shaffer, Paola Santiago and Samantha Douds. Both events qualified for the 2023 Iowa Girls State Swimming & Diving Meet, set for Friday and Saturday (November 10-11) at the Marshalltown YMCA/YWCA.
Sizemore is one of seven Norwalk girls who competed for Lincoln’s swim team this fall. The Rails qualified five total events for state and placed fifth out of six teams at the regional with 184 points. Sizemore placed sixth in two other regional events – the 200 freestyle and the 400 freestyle relay.
The state swimming prelims begin Friday at 11 a.m. and the state swimming finals start Saturday at noon. Sizemore is the 24th seed out of 32 qualifiers in the 500 freestyle. She finished 19th in the event at last year’s state meet.
