The National Weather Service, Iowa Homeland Security, and emergency management agencies around Iowa have designated today as Winter Weather Awareness Day in Iowa.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Chad Hahn with the National Weather Service in Des Moines said, “As the length of daylight decreases and the days cool toward the winter months, it is time to ensure all Iowans have made preparations for the winter season.”

He says the first snow of the season often catches motorists re-adjusting to winter traveling conditions. According to the Iowa Department of Transportation, an average of over 8,500 crashes have occurred each winter on Iowa roadways over the past five years.

He reminds everyone to have their vehicle’s winter survival kit packed and freshly stocked. Items such as a flashlight with extra batteries, a first aid kit, snow shovel, ice scraper, non-perishable foods, water, booster cables, extra winter clothing, sand for traction, and cell phone with charger are must haves.

The National Weather Service issues several warnings and advisories related to winter weather. Stay tuned to KNIA/KRLS for local information during severe winter weather events.
