United Way continues to help support Marion County.

United Way is a worldwide organization that provides funds to nonprofits to help mobilize communities around the world to close gaps and open opportunities so everyone can thrive. United Way is active in 37 countries and 1,100 communities, partnering with local organizations to provide funding and opportunities. The Marion County United Way was established in 1972, and has granted over $500,000 over the last decade.

The mission of the Marion County United Way (MCUW) is to give assistance to agencies that provide education and health and human services in the Marion County area. Specifically the MCUW helps Girl Scouts participating in STEM programs, seniors benefiting from nutritious meals, students learning about internet safety, and bridging gaps to help individuals get to medical appointments. The MCUW partners with twelve different nonprofits throughout the county. United Way is always in need of volunteers and donations and MCUW Board Member Rita Schacherer says all the money stays right here in our communities.

“All of this money is kept in Marion County other than having to pay some dues to United Way International. We are a volunteer board so the money that comes in, is all paid out to Marion County agencies.”
