The Norwalk girls basketball team rolled to 2-0 on Monday night with a 71-32 rout of ADM in their home opener. The Norwalk bowling teams, meanwhile, opened their season at Newton and were both defeated at Cardinal Lanes.

The Warrior basketball girls led ADM just 16-14 after one quarter, then outscored the 0-2 Tigers 20-4 in the second period and 32-17 in the second half. It was a 61-point turnaround from last year’s meeting in Adel, when ADM prevailed 66-44.

Bailey Birmingham finished with 33 points and six rebounds for Norwalk, and has now scored 64 points in two games this season. Ava Carlson added 11 points and seven boards and Pearl Brown had six points. First-year Warriors head coach Joe Sigrist tells KNIA-KRLS Sports that his team’s consistent pressure takes a toll on teams, calling the Warriors relentless on defense and fast in their transition offense.

The Norwalk girls play their third non-conference game in five days tonight at Bondurant-Farrar. Varsity tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

In bowling, Newton topped the Norwalk boys by nearly 600 pins, winning 3046 to 2449. The Cardinals’ Owen Guildberg rolled a two-game series of 446 and Andrew Winfrey led the Warriors with a 377 series and high game of 212. Also topping 300 for Norwalk were Gavin Housley with a 326 and Tanner Housley (304).

Newton won the girls dual 2095 to 1905, led by Libbie Keith’s 417 series. Norwalk was led by Julia Palen’s 349, Ellery Racz’s 309 and a 233 by Atto White.

Norwalk’s next meet is Saturday, December 2, against Creston at Air Lanes Bowling Center in Des Moines.
