The Knoxville Police Department wants local merchants aware of shoplifting deterrent tips as the busiest shopping time of the year has arrived.
With the busy shopping season for local businesses also comes a significant risk of shoplifting, and the Knoxville Police Department wants business owners and managers to know what to be aware of when it comes to theft. Some common types of shoplifting techniques are concealment, distraction, and manipulation. The police department says some ways of recognizing a thief is someone constantly watching employees, tugging and adjusting clothing frequently, roaming with no purpose, and leaving quickly. Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller says there is also another way to recognize someone who might be suspicious.
“Someone who enters the store carrying a large purse or backpack. It doesn’t necessarily mean they’re a thief, but it does mean that you keep a closer eye on them.”
Ways that business owners can combat theft is acknowledging everyone who enters the store, never leave customers unattended in the store, keep site lines open for employees and customers, and lock up expensive merchandise.
