The newly voted in Knoxville School Board members received their oath of office, and elections of board officers were held at Monday night’s school board meeting.
New school board members Brian Slykhuis and Susan Swartzendruber, along with incumbent Dave Smith, received their official oath of office to take over on the board after an official adjournment of retiring board members Cheri Gerdes and Larissa Van Donselaar. Dave Smith was then voted to become the new school board president and Monica Sullivan was voted on as vice president. Craig Mobley was also voted to resume his duties of board secretary/treasurer.
At the start of Monday’s meeting, there were three public hearings held regarding sale of school district land to Kwik Trip Inc., the Randy Wilson Track improvement project, and the proposed demolition of the old middle school building. After several community members shared their input on the different topics, the board ultimately had to table the item relating to Kwik Trip due to a delay in the purchase agreement, and the Randy Wilson Track bid was accepted for the new home bleachers and press box.
Also at the meeting were appointments to board committees and a discussion on the issue of KCSD staff members wanting to move to a four day work week. The Knoxville School Board agreed to only meet once in the month of December due to the fourth Saturday falling on Christmas Day.
