indianola-8

The Southeast Polk basketball teams swept Indianola in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday evening, the Indians girls falling 75-34 to the #14 Rams, while the boys fell 53-35 heard live on 94.3 KNIA.

The Rams defense was just too tough for the Indians girls to overcome, as they held the game close for the majority of the first quarter, but eventually fell behind 21-9, then gave up 30 second quarter points to trail 51-16 to get running clock for the entire second half. Lauren Olson led the team with 10 points.

The Indians boys were locked into a defensive battle, trailing just 10-8 after the first, and would take an 11-10 lead early in the second quarter, but the Rams would come back to lead by six points the entirety of the second and third quarters with the teams trading sporadic buckets. After trailing 33-27 after the third and scoring the first points of the quarter, the Rams went on a 15-0 run to seal the game. Head coach Jeff Ebling tells KNIA Sports the Indians young athletes showed a lot of progress against a physical class 4A opponent.

“As time goes on and we continue to get better and better, we’ll continue to focus on fundamentals for the young guys. You saw glimpses of some of these younger guys from the juniors down to the freshman who really played really well. We just have to continue to get better. That’s easy to say, but can we come in after a loss and have that drive of having to get a little bit better than yesterday, and if we can do that then that’s all we can ask for from these guys and hopefully we’ll see some results as the season goes on.”

Andrew DeWall and Easton McGraw each had 8 points to lead the team. The girls fall to 0-2, the boys to 0-1, and both teams next play Friday hosting Newton.
