The PCM girls and boys basketball teams defeated Heart of Iowa Conference opponent Greene County Friday night as Tony Ford got his first win as new PCM boys basketball coach.

The Mustang girls came out strong against the Rams and never let up throughout the contest getting a commanding 56-23 win. Addison Steenhoek was the leading scorer on the night with 19 points and Lila Milani came away with 18 points in the contest. The win moves the Mustang girls to 3-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. PCM Girls Basketball Coach Sami Allison-Rodriguez says her team continues to improve.

“Every single day we are trying to get better. Whether we have practice or whether we have a game we’re trying to improve. I felt like we did that tonight because sometimes you play a game like this and things get sloppy, and you get sloppy, and you have turnovers, and silly mistakes. I think maturity stepped up at least in the second half, and we took care of the ball, and had good opportunities at the basket.”

The PCM boys came away with a 61-45 win on the night after trailing at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs found their stride in the second and continued that momentum all the way to the end. Gavin Van Gorp was the leading scorer for the PCM boys on the night with 19 total points and Jacob Wendt had 14. After the win, the Mustang boys improved to 1-1 on the season and 1-0 in the conference. Tony Ford got his first win as new PCM boys basketball coach and he said he knew things would come together for his team. Ford says his mind wasn’t on his first win because he knew it would come in time.

“I wasn’t really thinking about it because I knew what I was surrounded with. We have really good young men and they’re doing everything I’m asking and I knew it was going to come together so it was just a matter of time.” 

The PCM boys and girls teams will both compete at Wells Fargo Arena today as part of the Iowa Wolves High School Hoops Showcase against Saydel with the girls game starting at 12:30pm and the boys game starting at 2:00 pm.
