The Indianola girls basketball recovered from an early deficit to win on the road at Oskaloosa Friday night 61-49, while the boys fell in overtime to Osky 63-55 in a Little Hawkeye Conference doubleheader heard live on 94.3 KNIA.
The boys found themselves in a tight game the entire way through, with neither team earning a lead more than six points throughout the contest until the very end, Indianola trailing 15-12 after the first and 28-25 at halftime. Indianola outscored Osky 15-9 in the third to take a 40-37 lead going into the fourth, but trailed by three with less than a minute to go before Hayden Schulte hit a three-point shot to tie the score and force overtime at 53-apiece. Osky would shut down the Indians in the extra period and ice the game with free throws. Derek Wilmott led the team in scoring with 22 points.
The girls fell behind early after Oskaloosa pounded the ball inside, but after trailing 15-12 after the first quarter, the defense began swarming and the offense began to catch fire from deep. Senior Brynn Bishop scored 11 second quarter points as the Indians took a 34-27 halftime lead, the maintained that throughout the second half to earn the victory. Freshman guard Alexa Guyer said after the game the team brought the energy that they needed to get the win.
“I think we knew we had to work super hard tonight. Everyone was just running the court super hard and just working hard out there. I am just super proud of our teammates on the bench. They brought the energy and it transferred onto the court. You could see it. Our team was just working so hard, and I was super impressed with the energy and how we were pushing the ball up the floor. It was a great environment to be around.”
Bishop led four Indians in double-figures with 16, while Guyer had 12.
The girls improve to 2-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference play, while the boys are 0-3 and 0-2. Both teams next play Monday hosting Ankeny.
