Those dreaming of back-to-back White Christmas days are out of luck, but that doesn’t mean needed precipitation is out of the question. Marvin Percha is the Operation Program Leader with the National Weather Service in Des Moines, and says on any given year, there’s about a 30-40 percent chance locally of at least one inch of snow on the ground for Christmas. Forecast highs in the 50s and the recent stretch of mild conditions will dash that possibility this year. However, Percha says one-to-two inches of needed rainfall could fall starting on Christmas Eve and continuing throughout the holiday. Most of the region is now considered in extreme drought, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor report.
