As the end of the year approaches this weekend, those considering charitable donations are reminded that rules prior to 2020 once again apply as it relates to taxes. Brett Nikkel, a Professional CPA with Van Maanen, Sietstra, Meyer & Nikkel in Pella, says those who want to take advantage of charitable donation deductions need to keep record of their giving.

“You always want to have documentation that proves anything that’s going on your tax return. So, when it comes to those deduction type items, some of them you’re going to get tax forms for like your mortgage interest, but when you’re writing off taxes or medical expenses or charitable donations, you want to start gathering receipts. Especially with those charitable donations, you’re supposed to have an acknowledgement from the charity, and you want to just keep that on file so you have backing for all those numbers that you’re claiming on your tax return.”

Those who want to take advantage of the benefit need to make donations by Sunday evening.
