Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Knoxville makes homemade quilts to send overseas to organizations and individuals in need.

The quilting group meets every Monday at the church in Knoxville and everyone has their own role to create homemade quilts that are sent to third world countries as part of Lutheran World Relief. The group is a combination of quilters with many years of experience and with little to no experience. The group also makes baby care kits and in October the group sent 126 quilts, 73 school bags, and 254 baby kits to Lutheran World Relief. Quilter Susan Mayer says that they use old materials to make something of comfort for those in need.

“Our goal is to take leftover fabrics and fibers, things that have passed their usefulness in our culture, and turn them into something warm that will comfort somebody. All of our things go to third world countries, typically countries that don’t have very much for materials, and we distribute them through Lutheran World Relief.”

The group encourages anyone interested in the program to join them on Monday’s at 9:00am.
