Marion County Public Health continues to offer regular Narcan training for anyone wanting to learn how to save lives in an instance of an overdose. 

Opioid overdoses continue to be a deadly epidemic worldwide, especially with widespread access to fentanyl. A small dose of fentanyl can lead to an overdose that potentially results in death. Narcan is an antidote designed to reverse the effects of opioids and could save someone’s life. It is injected through the nose and blocks opioid receptors in the brain.  

Marion County Public Health wants the community to know what to do in case of an overdose situation and how to save lives with Narcan. Marion County Public Health Nurse Judi Van Hulzen said that they offer this training so the public is always prepared.

“It is a bit of a passion of mine. It can be prevented. You need to have this stuff in your home to use to treat this if you have any inkling that there is any drugs going on. An opioid is anything from fentanyl, to methadone, to oxycodone. Those types of drugs. You need to be aware and look, it’s a disease so it doesn’t mean they’re a bad person at all.”
