The Marion County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents of safety tips when driving in freezing temperatures.

During this time of year, it is crucial to always be safe when traveling, especially when snow and ice are present on the roads. According to the National Highway Traffic Administration, there were 395 fatal car crashes and over 22,000 injuries relating to snow and ice in 2021. According to the same source, when it comes to winter driving – speed is key. Before traveling, residents are reminded to check tire tread and the status of the battery, and make sure the vehicle is stocked in case of an emergency. Marion County Sheriff Jason Sandholdt says it’s also important to defrost windows before hitting the road.

“You’re going to get pulled over for it and more importantly it’s just not safe. Take the time to turn on the defrost and let the care thaw out a bit. Not only the front windshield but the back windshield and side windows. A lot of people forget the side windows.”

Always give your vehicle plenty of space to come to a complete stop as well.
