The first day to file federal taxes is Monday, January 29th. Professional CPA Brett Nikkel with Van Maanen, Sietstra, Meyer & Nikkel says as soon as someone has their entire tax documentation received, they should plan on filing.

“It’s always better to be on top of things and get things done sooner rather than later, even if you have to pay, you can still figure out your tax return and then wait to pay on the due date. It’s just better to be proactive and get your things together as soon as you can, because that’s going to give you more time to make sure that everything is correct on that return and to make any changes if you need to before it gets filed.”

Nikkel also encourages everyone to have their documents prepared by a professional, because he feels it’s the best way to make the most out of a person’s finances and that it’s important to have someone backing up any issues with potential audits.
