The Norwalk wrestling and bowling teams all competed on Saturday for the first time in nine days.
The Norwalk boys wrestlers finished ninth out of 21 teams at Urbandale’s Ed Winger Classic, scoring 66 total points. Warrior senior Tyler Harper improved to 30-0 on the season, winning the 113-pound bracket with three first-period pins and a 5-1 decision over Ankeny Centennial’s Cale Vandermark in the finals. Dominic Tigner placed fourth at 157 with a 3-2 record on the day while Aiden Moret took eighth at 126, going 2-3 with a pin.
Bettendorf claimed the team title with 199.5 points, winning a close three-team battle with Fort Dodge and Ankeny Centennial. Norwalk’s next meet is a dual at Indianola on Thursday.
The Norwalk girls wrestlers competed at the Colfax-Mingo Tournament and finished 12th out of 19 schools with 60 points. Raccoon River-Northwest easily won the meet with 274 points. The Warriors had six place-winners on the day, led by Masie Silvius taking fourth at 190 pounds. Silvius went 2-2 with two wins by fall. Madelyn Blomgren placed fifth at 235, going 3-2 with two pins, and Madison Froehle was 3-3 with two pins for sixth place in the 100-pound bracket.
The Warrior girls will now prep for Friday’s regional tournament at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.
The Norwalk bowlers split a dual meet with Knoxville at Statesmen Lanes in Oskaloosa. The Warrior boys improved to 4-4 with a 2718-2492 win. The girls lost to the Panthers by just 30 total pins, 1974-1944, and are now 3-5 overall.
Gavin Housley led the Norwalk boys with a two-game series of 411, followed by Andrew Winfrey’s 368 and Tanner Housley’s 367. Julia Palen rolled a 299 series for the girls and Ellery Racz had a 288. The Warriors travel to Urbandale for a make-up dual on Monday at 3:45.
Norwalk Basketball at Newton Monday Night
The Norwalk basketball teams are scheduled to play four times this week, starting with tonight’s girl-boy doubleheader at Newton. The girls game tips off at 6:15 p.m., followed by the boys game at 7:45. Both contests can be heard live on 94.3 KNIA as well as KNIA3, beginning with pregame coverage at approximately 6:00 p.m.
The Class 4A 8th-ranked Warrior girls picked up a pair of road wins last week and now stand 11-2 overall and 4-1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The Warrior boys improved to 8-2 and 5-0, respectively, with a come-from-behind win at Pella Christian on Friday.
Also this week, Norwalk will host Pella on Tuesday night and Ames on Saturday afternoon while traveling to Indianola on Friday night.
