The Simpson women’s basketball team fell in double overtime to the Spartans of Dubuque Saturday 83-76, while the men had an 11-point lead early in the second half but couldn’t hold on as they fell to the Spartans 75-66.
The two evenly matched women’s teams traded blows throughout the entire contest, with neither team earning a lead of more than a couple points, with Simpson leading 34-30 at halftime, and the score tied at 48 going into the fourth. With just seconds remaining, Haley Rasmussen hit a pair of free throws to take a two point lead, but Dubuque would score with just .5 seconds to go and missed an and-one free throw attempt to win the game to force the extra period. Both teams came out firing in the extra period and the score was tied at 74 to force another extra period when the Storm ran out of gas and Dubuque took control. Cassie Nash scored 21 points to lead the team.
The Storm men were behind early, but went on a run late to takes 39-31 lead at halftime, then hit an early three to lead by 11 points with 18:32 left to go in the game, and would then suffer an 18-0 run by the Spartans over the next eight minutes that saw them lose control of the contest. Simpson wouldn’t go down without a fight, and brought the score back to tied and a slight lead multiple times, but couldn’t hold on. Andrew Gibb scored 20 to pace Simpson.
The women are now 10-7 overall and 5-3 in conference action, while the men are 7-10 and 1-7. Both teams next host rival Central on Wednesday.
