The Simpson women’s basketball team won their 45th straight game over Central Wednesday night 98-63, while the Central men dominated the paint as they swept the Storm for the third straight year winning 91-70 in a doubleheader heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

The Storm women fell behind for the first three minutes of the contest but closed the quarter on a big run to lead 26-17 after the first, then dropped 37 points in the second quarter to take a 30-point lead into the break, with Simpson shooting 69% from long range in the half led by Molly Lutmer with 22 points. The teams traded buckets in the second half as the Storm neared the century mark to earn the win. Simpson forced 30 Central turnovers and outscored the Dutch 35-18 off of the giveaways. Cassie Nash scored 23 to lead Simpson, while Samantha Scott led Central with 12.

The game was the same formula on the men’s side, with a close game throughout the early minutes of the first half with the game tied at 14, when Central went on a 12-0 run to take a lead they wouldn’t look back on. Josh Van Gorp was unstoppable inside, scoring 18 points in the first half as Central would lead 45-30 at halftime and never look back. The Dutch outscored the Storm in the paint 64-24, and outrebound the Storm 36-24 despite shooting just 28% from long range. Van Gorp ended the game with 29 points and 10 rebounds, while Grant Johnson was an assist shy of a triple-double with 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 9 assists. Andrew Curran and Andrew Gibb each had 14 for Simpson.

The Simpson women are now 11-7 overall and 6-3 in American Rivers Conference play, while the men are 7-11 and 1-8, both teams next host Wartburg on Saturday.

The Central women are now 9-10 and 3-7, while the men are 13-6 and 7-3, and travel to Coe on Saturday.
