The PCM girls and boys basketball teams defeated Perry Friday night in a Heart of Iowa Conference varsity doubleheader, a game heard live on the KRLS3 stream, while a majority of PCM fans wore blue to show support for Perry.

The Mustang girls defeated the Jayettes 48-21 to move to 12-4 overall on the season and 8-2 in the conference. The PCM girls saw balanced scoring from all five of their starters as each one of them had six points or more in the contest. The Mustang girls were led in scoring on the night by junior Addison Steenhoek who had 10 points and junior Rebecca De Vries who had 10 points in her best offensive performance of the season.

The Mustang boys had an offensive explosion in their contest defeating the Bluejays 82-45 to move to 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the conference. The PCM boys were led in scoring by junior Gavin Van Gorp who had 18 points, but the Mustangs saw significant production from their bench which accounted for 39 of their points. Jake Winters added 14 points for PCM off the bench to give the Mustangs a continued surge in the fourth quarter.

The PCM girls and boys basketball teams both wore Perry warm ups, the PCM coaches wore blue Perry shirts, and almost all Mustang fans showed up wearing blue to support the community that experienced a devastating tragedy just a few weeks ago. PCM boys basketball coach Tony Ford expressed gratitude for the community of PCM, and the way the Perry team pulled together. Ford says the Perry coaching staff exemplifies what it means to lead through something other than basketball.

“It just shows the heart of our community. We’re about helping others, supporting others, and caring for others. That’s what makes our community great. I’ve got to know the Perry boys head coach this year and he is just a fantastic guy. He is leading young men through some rough waters. You want to talk about somebody that is leading through something other than basketball. He is using it as an instrument to get those guys’ lives on track. He told me the boys are doing the same for him. It’s just a really awesome thing to see those guys pull together like that.”

The PCM girls and boys basketball teams will next compete on Monday when they travel to Greene County.
