All-American center Joshua Van Gorp pumped in single game school record 48 points Saturday as the Central College men’s basketball team rocked #23 Coe College 94-75, while a 13-0 run late in the fourth quarter doomed the Dutch women in a 69-55 loss and both games were heard live on 92.1 KRLS.

Van Gorp topped the school mark of 45 established by two-time conference MVP Jeff Verhoef in 1979 and tied by Steve Kraayenbrink in 1981. He also shattered Kraayenbrink’s single-game field goals mark of 18 with a memorable 20-of-24 shooting effort. He was 8-of-9 from the free throw line as well and pulled down 14 boards, his 10th double-double of the season.

Coe had staged a comeback 85-83 overtime men’s basketball victory over Central with a buzzer-beating tip-in on December 9th, but this time there was no drama. Down 24-23 with 8:49 left in the first half, Van Gorp scored 10 of the next 12 Dutch points as they burst ahead 35-26 and led at the break 44-30. Van Gorp had 20 points in the first half. Central stretched the advantage to as many as 21 as Van Gorp added another 10 field goals and eight free throws in a 28-point half.

The Dutch (9-11 overall, 3-8 American Rivers) were edged at home by Coe 65-63 on December 9th. Trailing by as many as nine in the first quarter and 38-32 at intermission, Central was still down 44-35 with 4 minutes left in the third quarter. The Dutch used an 8-0 run to climb back in the game and grabbed a 53-51 lead on an Abby Johnson bucket with 5:18 left in the game. After a pair of Coe buckets, center CeCe Moore scored to keep Central within 56-55 with 3:49 left, but it was all Coe the rest of the way. Freshman forward Kaitlyn Mumm scored a career-best 16 points, connecting on six of eight shots and also adding five rebounds.

Central returns to P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium on Wednesday for another league doubleheader against Buena Vista University that begins with the women’s game at 6 pm.
