Record-breaking performances helped Central College’s Joshua Van Gorp and Caroline McMartin claim the American Rivers Conference men’s and women’s athlete of the week awards, respectively. Olivia Bohlen was also cited as the conference women’s field athlete of the week.
Van Gorp shattered a pair of 43-year-old school records for the Dutch men’s basketball team on Saturday. He powered Central to two decisive conference road wins, 91-70 at Simpson on Wednesday and 94-75 at #23 league-leading Coe on Saturday. At Coe, Van Gorp poured in 48 points, breaking the school single-game scoring mark of 45 and the made 20 field goals to best the previous school record mark of 18. For the two games, he averaged 38.5 points and 12.0 rebounds while shooting 80.5% from the field.
McMartin broke another school indoor women’s track and field record Saturday, winning the 3,000 meters in 9:46.45 at the Grinnell Invitational. That’s the second-best performance in Division III this year. It’s the first time that McMartin has received indoor track and field track performer of the week honors. She’s also received outdoor track performer of the week honors once and cross country performer of the week honors six times.
Bohlen was cited for the first time. She won the women’s pentathlon at the Dutch Winter Multi-Event last Thursday and Friday with 3,372 points. That ranks #5 in Division III this season and is also fifth on the school-record leaderboard.
