It was a pair of American Rivers Conference blowout victories for the Central College basketball teams Wednesday night, as the women routed Buena Vista 75-38 and the men cruised past the Beavers 104-89.
Forward Kaitlyn Mumm and guard Hannah Dau each had 14 points while guard Abby Johnson added 12, as no Dutch player was on the floor for more than 20 minutes. Central (10-11 overall, 4-8 American Rivers) led wire-to-wire, taking an 18-6 lead and continued building on it throughout the night. Central only shot 38.8% from the field but limited Buena Vista to 29.1% and controlled the glass, 50-33.
In the nightcap of the doubleheader, the Dutch men erupted for 61 points in the first half, and remained in control throughout. Guard Kaleb Brand went off for a career-high 29 points Wednesday, while center Joshua Van Gorp followed up his 48-point performance Saturday with 21 on Wednesday. Central (15-6 overall, 9-3 American Rivers) drained a season-high 16 3-point goals, including an 11-of-22 effort in the first half. Forward Grant Johnson added 13 points and 12 assists in the win, while Brad Curren contributed 15 points off the bench.
The Central basketball squads are back at home Saturday for another conference doubleheader with Loras College starting at 2 pm. Saturday’s contests can be heard live on 92.1 KRLS.
