The Knoxville School Board met their budget reduction goal at their special session meeting Thursday night.
To get the district back to a place where they want to be financially, it was determined that $725,000 would need to be cut from the total budget. The board unanimously voted to approve the proposed budget cuts presented Thursday night that included the reduction of a special education position, attrition of a high school math teacher, reduction of a Panther Academy coordinator position, and reduction of director/administrator vacation pay, which totaled approximately $348,500. Knoxville Community School District Superintendent Cassi Pearson says that Knoxville is one of many schools across the state that are making necessary budget cuts at this time.
“I believe 75% of schools in Iowa are doing budget reductions because of the state of public education. We are one of just many schools across the state that have had to go through this process. Our philosophy was to have the least impact on our students, protect as many programs as we could, and to make sure we are being able to continue our community efforts as well.”
