Several education bills made their way through the first legislative deadline, but the biggest piece of the state budget each year has yet to be settled.
State Representative Brooke Boden says the Iowa House has released a goal of a three percent state supplemental aid increase for public schools — which is also tied to the amount increased for educational savings accounts.
“We’re hoping to get that out so schools can set their budgets, and one of the other things that’s been discussed majorly is a start date for next year, because it falls on a Friday, so that’s been a continued conversation that as kids go back to school, we don’t interrupt the state fair.”
Governor Kim Reynolds proposed a 2.5% bump in her Condition of the State address, but that was also tied to major changes with Area Education Agencies and a potential increase to minimum pay for educators.
