Central Iowa Shelter and Services (CISS) is hosting Des Moines’ second annual Coldest Night of the Year 5K on Saturday.

The Coldest Night of the Year is an annual, family-friendly walk/run fundraiser hosted in locations across the United States and Canada. CISS has seen record-breaking numbers at the emergency shelter this winter, and Vice President of Advancement Alie Muller-Heit says that the event will help raise funds and awareness for their emergency shelter.

“With the additional people we are looking to raise funds for the emergency shelter for us to continue to support those individuals who are coming in needing clothing, food, meals, help with services, and also shelter to stay in.”

The event will be held at Des Moines Water Works Park and check-in will begin at 4 pm. The 5K will start at 5 pm and the event will conclude with closing remarks at 7 pm. During the event, CISS will be serving chili from their new food truck, and the Des Moines Biergarten will also be open for participants ages 21 and older.

Registration for the event is free and those interested in participating can learn more or register here.
