Sarah Zimmerman of the Simpson College women’s wrestling team has been named the Region V Wrestler of the Month by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for the month of February.
Zimmerman went 3-1 at the Division III Invitational on Feb. 2-3, earning runner-up honors. She opened the day with a 10-0 technical fall over Gada Bryant of Eureka and advanced to the semifinals with a tiebreaker decision over No. 10 Emily Mendez (Adrian). She pinned Riley Morrison of Trine before falling in the championship bout to Natalie Majer (Carthage).
The freshman from Hays, Kan. ranks second on the team with 22 wins this season. She has tallied 11 pins and six technical falls.
The Storm are just three days away from hosting the NCWWC Region V Tournament inside Cowles Fieldhouse. The top four wrestlers in each weight class will punch a ticket to the NCWWC National Championships taking place in Cedar Rapids, Iowa on March 8-9.
