The Knoxville Police Department is reminding citizens to renew their golf cart permits and UTV registration.

According to city code, golf carts and UTVs may be operated upon the streets of the city by persons possessing a valid operator’s license and are at least 18 years of age. To operate a golf cart within the city, it needs to be registered. A permit will only be issued once the owner has provided proof of liability insurance, and an inspection is done by the police department and city. UTVs may be operated upon the streets of the city and on two-lane state highways within the city, but are not allowed on any state divided highway. Knoxville Police Chief Aaron Fuller wants to remind community members that these vehicles should never be driven on sidewalks.

“Nowhere in the United States that I’m aware of can you operate a golf cart on a sidewalk. That is one of my biggest pet peeves. If you have a golf cart, make sure that you know where you can and where you can’t drive it and make sure that you know when you can and when you can’t drive it. Sun up to sun down and not on the highway. You can cross the highway but you can’t travel up and down it.”

The Knoxville Police Department can assist anyone with questions regarding golf carts and UTVs Monday-Friday from 8:00-5:00 pm. For all city code information relating to these vehicles you can follow this link
