While the Pella basketball team is best known for it’s high-flying, three-point shooting tradition, it’ll be how well they can slow a high-scoring field down at the state tournament that will ultimately determine their fate.
The Dutch enter the Class 3A quarterfinals with a group of seven other teams that are known for lighting up the scoreboard; every school except for Williamsburg is averaging more than 60 points per game, and the field includes the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 7 ranked scoring offenses from Decorah, Waverly-Shell Rock, and MOC-Floyd Valley. And of Ballard, Bondurant-Farrar, and Davenport Assumption, the Bombers and Knights have played a top 10 ranked schedule in Class 3A according to Power Rankings site BCMoore.
And a passerby won’t have to tell the Dutch about the scoring threats at state; the Go Hawks of Waverly dropped 86 points on them in the final week of the regular season.
Coverage of Pella/Waverly-Shell Rock state tournament basketball begins at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday on 92.1 KRLS.
