With spring rapidly approaching, the Marion County Roads Department is wrapping up another successful winter season. Marion County Engineer Tyler Christian says that while crews were busy clearing roadways throughout most of January, the number of snow events they worked was below average.
“Our average over the last 30 years is 17 snow events per winter season. And to date, hopefully we’re done, but to date we’re at 12. So, that’s a little below average. Salt and sand usage is a little below average as well, which is pretty common if the number of events is down. We didn’t have any major ice events, which typically uses more than double the salt of a snow event and when we had that blizzard, we actually didn’t put a lot of material down because it got so cold that the salt is ineffective in those temperatures. So, we didn’t use a lot of material, even though we got a significant amount of snow and drifting and whatnot.”
