The Knoxville Fire Department recommends testing your smoke detectors and changing their batteries.

With Daylight Saving Time recently starting, the department says this is a good semi-annual reminder to test detectors and make sure the batteries are replaced. According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly three out of five fire deaths happen in homes with either no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms, more than one-third of home fire deaths result from situations in which no smoke alarms are present, and the risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half for homes with working alarms. The Knoxville Fire Department is available to answer any questions regarding smoke detectors.
