The Norwalk track and field teams both topped 100 points and placed third in Tuesday’s Simpson High School Classic at Buxton Stadium. It was the first outdoor meet of the season for the Warriors.
The Norwalk girls scored 111 points and earned three gold medals on the night, including Maya Butler’s first-place mark of 15 feet, 4.75 inches in the long jump. The Warriors also won a pair of relays. The winning 4×200 relay featured Savannah Welch, Jillian Hammond, Nyah Hulbert and Ashlyn Brown, who clocked a time of 1:50.82. The Warriors later won the 4×100 relay in 51.79 with the team of Hailey Gear, Hulbert, Welch and Jaylynn Brandt.
Butler placed second in the open 800. The Warrior girls also took second in the distance medley relay and placed third in five events.
The Norwalk boys scored 107 points and matched the girls with three gold medals. Tony Anania won the mile in 4:24, Teegan Kralik won the 3,200 in 10:01, and the distance medley quartet of Gavin Dehmer, Tim Koerselman, AJ Mosqueda and Grant Wallace placed first in 3:47.19.
Daniel Webster placed second in the 110-meter hurdles and the Warriors also placed third in four events.
Team champions at Simpson were the Indianola girls with 206 points and the West Des Moines Valley boys with 185.
The Norwalk boys are scheduled to compete at the Waukee Northwest Invitational on Thursday. The girls’ next meet is March 28 at Ballard.
